Training the Next Generation of Clinician-Scientists in Liquid Biopsy for Breast Cancer

Overview

The PMAC International Fellowship Program supports early-career physicians from institutions around the world in developing advanced expertise in liquid biopsy and precision oncology in breast cancer. Each year, the program funds six fellowships, giving young oncologists the opportunity to spend a dedicated research period embedded within the PMAC consortium — working directly alongside leading investigators on translational and clinical research that integrates liquid biopsy into cancer care.

Access to hands-on training in these fast-moving technologies remains limited for many young oncologists, particularly outside major U.S. research centers. Fellows return to their home institutions equipped with advanced research skills, international collaborations, and the expertise to bring modern precision oncology approaches into clinical practice — while remaining connected to a growing global network of PMAC-trained investigators.

Structure

PMAC supports fellows across three fellowship formats,

allowing physicians at different career stages to participate:

12-month fellowships — in-depth, long-term research immersion
6-month fellowships — intermediate research placements
3-month fellowships — shorter, focused research experiences

Every fellow works under the direct supervision of an experienced PMAC investigator

at one of the PMAC Participating Institutions, including:

Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston

Placement is determined by the candidate's research interests

and alignment with ongoing consortium projects.

Research & Educational Activities

Fellowship projects focus on translational and clinical research in breast cancer and liquid biopsy, including work with the PMAC annotated clinico-genomic database — one of the largest multi-institutional liquid biopsy datasets in breast cancer globally.

Fellows also take part in seminars, journal clubs, and workshops across the PMAC network, and present their work at international scientific conferences.

Expected Impact

The program is designed to create lasting impact at both the individual and institutional level — training physician-scientists equipped to lead translational research back home, while strengthening collaborative ties between international academic centers and the PMAC network.

Outcomes are tracked over five years, from publications and career placement to ongoing collaboration with PMAC institutions.
